There are many books of tajwid. Those which will suffice the non-specialist student include the following:
Tuhfat al-Atfal by Shaykh Sulayman al-Jamzuri (may Allah have mercy on him). There are several commentaries on it, one of the best of which is Minhah Dhil-Jalal fi Sharh Tuhfat al-Atfal by Shaykh `Ali ibn Muhammad as-Dabba` (may Allah have mercy on him) – the prominent shaykh of the Egyptian reciters.
Then there is Al-Muqaddimat al-Jazariyyah by Imam Ibn al-Jazari (may Allah have mercy on him), and there are many commentaries on it; some scholars said that there as many as one hundred. The most well-known commentary, which is very useful, is the commentary written by Shaykh al-Islam Zakariya al-Ansari (may Allah have mercy on him), which is called Ad-Daqa’iq al-Muhkamah fi Sharh al-Muqaddimah, with explanatory notes by Shaykh Sayyid Lashin (may Allah have mercy on him).
Useful contemporary books which are based on the books mentioned above include: At-Tajwid al-Musawwar by Dr. Ayman Suwayd; Al-Mujaz al-Basit fi `Ilm at-Tajwid by the female reciter Zaynab Hilmi, with an Introduction written by the shaykh of the reciters, Ahmad al-Ma`sarawi.
