Is it Sunnah to pray two rak`ahs before consummating the marriage?

Question: 132234

There are some who say that there is a prayer for marriage that is called the Sunnah prayer of marriage, and it is to be offered before consummating the marriage, i.e., having intercourse. They say that you should pray two rak`ahs, then after that consummate the marriage. Please advise us.

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah.

Some reports have been narrated concerning that from some of the Sahabah, which speak of praying two rak`ahs before consummating the marriage. But there is no reliable report that has been soundly narrated. But if someone prays two rak`ahs as some of the early generations did, there is nothing wrong with that, and if he does not do that, there is nothing wrong with it. The matter is flexible, and I do not know of any reliable, authentic hadith that speaks of that.
