Question

We work for a company that does assignments for students of a particular university. This is with the permission of the university itself, without forcing students to hire the company to do their assignments. Is the money that we earn from doing their assignments haraam?.

Answer

Praise be to Allah.

The aim of the assignments or projects that students have to do is to train them in work and test their ability. So the students themselves have to do them, and it is not permissible to prepare them for them, whether that is in return for payment or not, because that involves deceit, lying and corrupting young people, and it lets weak students graduate who do not deserve to graduate.

The university cannot allow students to buy such assignments for money and then give grades and certificates based on them.

We have previously discussed the prohibition on writing research and other assignments for students, in the answer to question no. 95893 and 104812

But it may be that the University’s aim with these assignments is to gather sound academic material for the students, so that after that the students will study or memorise it, because the exam, for example, will be based on these assignments. If that is the case, there is nothing wrong with you doing this work and whatever money you earn will be halaal in this case.

If you have more information or details, then write to us and we will be happy to communicate with you. We ask Allah to help us and you to obey Him and do that which pleases Him.

And Allah knows best.
